Second: Ruling on Artificial Insemination1. The need <strong>of</strong> married woman who cannot conceive as well asthe need <strong>of</strong> her husband for child is a legitimate purpose thatpermits her treatment through one <strong>of</strong> the permissible methods<strong>of</strong> artificial insemination.2. The first method (in which male sperm is taken from marriedman then injected into the uterus <strong>of</strong> his wife through internalinsemination) is a method that is permissible in the <strong>Islamic</strong>Shari’ah with the above-mentioned general conditions and afterit is confirmed that the woman needs this operation in order toconceive.3. The third method (in which sperm and ovum are taken from amarried couple, and their insemination takes place externally ina test-tube, then the zygote is planted in the uterus <strong>of</strong> the wife,owner <strong>of</strong> the ovum.) is in principle acceptable in the Shari’ahview, however it is not secure at all due to doubts andcomplications which surround the whole operation, so thismethod should not be resorted to, unless there are cases <strong>of</strong>extreme necessity and after the above-mentioned generalconditions are met.4. The seventh method (in which the sperm and ovum are takenfrom the couple, and after their insemination in the testcontainer,the zygote is planted in uterus <strong>of</strong> the other wife <strong>of</strong>same husband whereas she volunteers out <strong>of</strong> her own choicefor this pregnancy on behalf <strong>of</strong> her co-wife, whose uterus issurgically removed) seemed to be permissible to the <strong>Council</strong>, ifit is really needed and the above-mentioned general conditionsare met.5. In the three permissible cases, the <strong>Council</strong> decides that thelineage <strong>of</strong> the born child would belong to the couple, who arethe source <strong>of</strong> sperm and ovum.
