Diploma in Interior Design (DID)Diploma inInterior Design (DID)This course dispels the myth that Interior Design is merely Interior Decoration. Instead it seeks to explore interior design as an expression andpossibility of creating experiential and meaningful spaces.The focus of the programme is on exploration, experimentation, imagination and creativity. Students are encouraged to develop their designideas through projects that seek to enrich the design thinking and making skills. Students are also trained to question the norm and to pushboundaries in design.The Diploma in Interior Design (DID) programme aims to train students to be well-rounded creative designers, who are able to conceptualise, articulate,integrate and develop designs and communicate as well as manage implementation of projects.Course WorkStudents are nurtured to develop theircreativity through design studio projects thatare both exploratory and applicable in reallife. Basic design skills are introduced duringthe common foundation in the first semesterof first year.Students are taught research and mappingtechniques that will allow them to find uniqueways to interpret and design. Visualisationtechniques are an important part of an InteriorDesigner’s ability to express, thus both manualdrawing and computer aided design andpresentation skills are taught from the first year.Students also learn theory of design andtechnology to develop their creative and criticalthinking skills in a project. The hands-on studiobased environment helps inculcate in studentsthe ability to be independent workers as wellas team players in an interior design practice.Students have opportunities to gainoverseas experiences through study trips,industrial attachment training and immersionprogrammes.AssessmentMost of the modules are year-long andsemester long and are in-course assessed.The assessment activities may consistof projects, tests, written reports, casestudies, group work and assignments.Critique sessions and portfolio reviews willbe conducted.Career ProspectsSP graduates with a Diploma in Interior Designare able to work in the following practices:• Architecture and Interior Design• Exhibition / stage set/ event design• Furniture design• Model making• Merchandise organizations with in housedesign/display department150 SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC PROSPECTUS 2012 - 2013
