a “Playground–for–All” concept with theinjections of waterways and green spaces, artand culture vicinity and city buzz at variouscity centres.The Inter-Ministerial Committee for SustainableDevelopment (IMCSD) has recently unveiled ablueprint for a sustainable <strong>Singapore</strong> for 2020and 2030.With all these developments in the pipeline,there will be ample opportunities for graduatesin the built environment and design fieldto contribute in these new challenges. Inaddition, the ‘Experience Economy’ andglobalisation will need graduates who arecreative, innovative and enterprising.Internship ProgrammeIn this programme, students are attachedto local and overseas firms and corporateestablishments in both the public and privatesectors. For the Diploma in Architecture,Diploma in Landscape Architecture, Diplomain Civil Engineering with Business andDiploma in Environmental Management &Water Technology, the students undergoa 12-week internship programme duringthe semester vacation and academic termafter their second year of studies. Diplomain Hotel & Leisure Facilities Managementand Diploma in Integrated Events & ProjectManagement students undergo a 22-weekinternship programme during the semestervacation and one semester after theirsecond year of studies.During the attachment, lecturers assume therole of liaison officers to guide the students incontributing towards the establishments theyare attached to and to help them maximiselearning through real life experiences.Overseas Industrial Training Programmeto places such as Malaysia, Australia andChina have been arranged in recent yearsand will continue.Assessment and Progressionof StudentsFor students taking the Diploma inArchitecture and Diploma in LandscapeArchitecture courses, the core modules aremainly year-long modules with 100% in-courseassessment. A variety of teaching methodsand learning experiences (project-basedtutorials, case studies, site visits, study tripsand research, as well as written tests) are usedto develop confidence, independence andcompetency. Students work in design studioswith personalised guidance of lecturers ontheir projects and they learn to present incritique sessions. This practice-orientedtraining gives students a taste of the ‘real’world. A portfolio review is also conducted atthe end of each session to review student’soverall performance.Students in the Diploma in Hotel & LeisureFacilities Management course are assessedvia a combination of course work over thesemester and end of semester examination.Course work is in the form of tutorials, lab/practical work, mini-projects/case studies andtests. Some modules are 100% in-courseassessed while others have a semester examcomponent of up to 60% with a course workcomponent of 40% or higher.Students in the Diploma in Integrated Events& Project Management course are assessedthrough a combination of 100% in-courseassessment modules and Semester examtype modules. In-course assessment is in theform of tutorials, lab/practical work, projects,case studies and tests. Semester exam typemodules normally have an end of semesterexam component of between 40%-60% withcoursework making up the balance.Students in the Diploma in Civil Engineeringwith Business course do a combinationof year-long and semester-long modules.Assessment for each module will be by meansof continuous course work and semesterexaminations. Students take a prescribe setof modules in each semester or year. Secondand final year students have to do industrybasedor applied research projects.Students in the Diploma in EnvironmentalManagement and Water Technology coursedo a combination of year-long and semesterlongmodules. Assessment for each modulewill be by means of continuous course workand semester examinations. Students take aprescribed set of modules in each semester oryear.
