Diploma inEnvironmental Management & WaterTechnology (DEWT)The Diploma in Environmental Management and Water Technology aims to equip students withskills that are important for this nascent economic sector that are also in line with PUB’s ActiveBeautiful Clean (ABC) Waters Design, among other government initiatives.The government established the National Research Foundation to provide funding of $330million for strategic R&D initiatives to promote the growth of the environmental and watersector. Globally, <strong>Singapore</strong> has plans to collaborate with other countries in water technology,including wastewater treatment, reverse osmosis and desalination. It is estimated that the Asianenvironmental engineering market alone (excluding Japan) is worth $37 billion a year and hasthe potential to triple to $105 billion.Students will be provided with hands-on and active learning opportunities, such as the buildingof water-treatment kits and the operation of desalination and water treatment model plants,as well as case studies, project-based learning, problem-based learning and the final-yearenvironmental management and water technology projects, to learn how environmentalmanagers, water technologists and engineers contribute to the management of the environmentand help provide solutions for a clean water supply.This course will require students to workas individuals and in small groups so as tobuild teamwork, cultivate self confidence anddevelop interpersonal skills. Assignmentsare also designed to allow the integrationof concepts, the expression of personalabilities and interests, as well as to stimulatestudents to be innovative and to apply soundengineering principles and design concepts.As polytechnic graduates today areexpected to be versatile and be able towork in a cross-disciplinary environment,this course prepares students for suchan environment with its multi-disciplinaryprogramme, conceived with inputs from theSchool of Chemical & Life Sciences, Schoolof Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering,School of Electrical & Electronic Engineeringand SP’s Centre for Applications inEnvironmental Technology. The involvementof other schools in this programme meansthat students are allowed access to theirlatest and most sophisticated equipments.The course offers:• A 12-week internship• Environmental Projects 1 & 2 which maybe linked to the industry through civilengineering, environmental and waterrelatedcompanies• A Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate(CDlO) framework that prepares students tobe work ready, life ready and world ready• An option for students to take a Diplomapluscertificate course which will continue totrain students to acquire knowledge, skillsand the right attitudes for work and lifeCareer ProspectsIn <strong>Singapore</strong>, the emerging environmentaland water technology sector is expectedto triple to $1.7 billion by 2015. Graduateswill enjoy employment opportunities withgovernment ministries, public sector agencies,universities and research institutes, as well asindustry players, environmental consultanciesand service providers in growth areas suchas water supply, wastewater reclamation,membrane technologies, desalination, solidand hazardous waste management, as well asenvironmental remediation.Our graduates can also pursue further studiesat local and overseas universities to obtain adegree in environmental and civil engineeringcourses.
