CP7022Public Health andCommunity NutritionIntroduces the role of public health andnutrition at the local, national and internationallevels. Emphasis is placed on nutritioneducation, food habits, survey methodologyand current topics in the area of public healthand community nutrition.CP7023Sports and Exercise NutritionAllows students to integrate their knowledgeof nutritional physiology and biochemistry andintermediary metabolism with that of exercisephysiology. Students can then develop anunderstanding of the nutritional and practicaldietary needs of sports people and athletes. It includes discussion of different sportinggroups and exercise types; macro- andmicronutrient requirements; practical dietaryconsiderations in relation to training andcompetition and current issues and researchin sports nutrition.CP7024Health Practices and DeliveryExamines and explores the diversity of healthoccupations, issues and the contextual factorsthat influence the scope and delivery healthof practices or health related services withinSingapore and the international community.Dimensions of health and occupationalstructures influencing the performanceand scope of health practices of regulatedand non-regulated health professionals willbe examined and analyzed. In addition, health occupations in traditional and nontraditionalhealth settings will be studied.A breath of micro (workplace) and macro(external, government, regulations, legislation, consumer rights to health, economic factors,evidence-based health, and societal demands)contextual issues will be examined along withthe effects of these factors upon the deliveryof current health services and will impact uponthe future transformation of health practices.CP7025Physical Fitness AssessmentIntroduces students the tools of assessingphysical fitness. Students will also learnabout theories on the physiologicalassessments of fitness.CP7026Alternative and ComplementaryHealth & NutritionExamines a variety of areas and issuesconcerning the whole field of alternativeand complementary health such as Orientalmedicine, mind-body interventions, manualtherapies, herbal and pharmacologicalapproaches to alternative health and lifestyledecision-making. The module examinesalternative nutrition such as macrobiotics, vegetarianism, Chinese traditional herbs, andother nutraceuticals and functional foods.Incorporation of complementary health intothe formulation of healthy recipes for wellbalanced diets will also be covered.CP7027InternshipThis is a 15-week programme wherebystudents will be interned to receive relevanttraining at nutrition, health and wellnesscompanies, institution and agencies.CP8001Materials in PracticeRefer to CP4088CP8002Environmental Safety & HealthProvides students with theoretical knowledgeof environmental chemistry and environmentalmanagement and aims to help studentsunderstand hazard recognition through causesof accidents; the anatomy of an accidentand accident prevention. Students will learnthe basic principles of risk assessment andcontrol, safety in material handling, personalprotective equipment, electrical, chemicaland general workshop safety, fire protection, prevention and control. Reference will bemade to the new Workplace Health & SafetyAct. The module will also cover basic industrialtoxicology, hygiene and vector control.CP8003Plastics Materials and AdditivesCovers the manufacture, properties andapplications of commodity and engineeringplastics such as polyolefins, acrylics, polyamides, polyacetals, polycarbonates andpolyesters. Topics on performance-enhancingadditives include heat stabilisers, plasticisers, lubricants, fillers, impact modifiers, blowingagents, antioxidants, UV stabilisers, flameretardantsand nucleating agents.CP8004Polymer ScienceGives a general understanding of synthesisof polymers, chain-growth & condensationpolymerisation, mechanism and kinetics, transition temperatures, structure/properties relationship and molecularweight determination.CP8005Materials ScienceCovers the structure, properties andapplications of important metals, alloys, and ceramics. Students will be introducedto crystallography, microstructure, defects, dislocations, strengtheningmechanisms, creep, phase equilibrium, phase rule, solid solutions.CP8006Polymer Fabrication ProcessesProvides an understanding and practicalknowledge of fabrication processes suchas injection moulding, thin wall moulding;micromoulding, extrusion, blow-moulding andvariants, rotational moulding; compressionmoulding; transfer moulding, thermoforming, filament winding and GRP hand lay up.CP8007Product Design and DevelopmentProvides students with knowledge of thefundamentals of product design, developmentand commercialisation, specialising in plasticsparts. It will also give them practice in usingappropriate methods and techniques inproduct modelling and rapid prototyping. The subject also supports the overall courseaim of developing problem-solving skills andencouraging students to think and learn bothindependently and in a team.CP8008Composites and AerospaceMaterialsProvides students the knowledge andunderstanding of composite materials.Students will understand the factors that affectthe strength and performance of compositematerials, the selection of additives, designand fabrication methods for composites forvarious applications, and quality inspection ofproducts. Students will be trained on practicallaboratory skills on the manufacturing, testing, inspection, and safety of composite materials.CP8009Materials Characterisation andFailure AnalysisProvides students with an overview ofthe common characterisation techniques, including infra-red spectroscopy, thermalanalysis, chromatography and microscopy.Other topics included are types andcauses of plastics failure and failureanalysis case studies.CP8010BiomaterialsProvides students with fundamentalknowledge on the types, properties andapplications of biomaterials in the medicalindustry with emphasis on implants, hydrogels, drug delivery systems and biocompatibility ofbiomaterials used in the human body.280 SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC PROSPECTUS 2012 - 2013
