CP5041Bioprocess Engineering PrinciplesProvides students with basic knowledgeand skills required for bioprocess operationsand developments. Topics covered includebiomolecules, basic genomic techniques,fermentation and protein purificationprinciples, and relevant bioprocess unitoperations. This module provides studentswith hands-on experience in the productionof recombinant proteins.CP5042BioanalyticsProvides students with basic knowledgeand skills required for performing laboratoryanalyses on bio-organisms and biomolecules.Beginning with an overview of biomoleculesand their applications as biopharmaceuticals,this module covers the important role ofbioanalytics in the biopharmaceutical industryand current analytical techniques.CP5043Membrane Separation ProcessesProvides students with basic knowledge inpolymeric membrane properties and theircharacterizations, followed by applicationof membranes in various separationprocesses, including water treatment anddesalination. This module covers the basicsof membrane science, membrane propertiesand their characterization, and applicationsin various separation processes such asultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, pervaporationand electrodeionization. It coversthe guidelines and requirements for themanufacture of active pharmaceuticalingredients, sterile & biological medicinalproducts, cosmetics and fragrances.CP5045Introduction to ChemicalEngineeringProvides students with basic understandingof the concept of units and dimensions,basic measurements in engineering, processflowsheets and engineering drawings.Students will be introduced to the applicationsof various unit operations, plant utilities, P &ID and auxiliary equipments in the chemicaland biochemical process industries. Studentswill be engaged in the practice of these basicskills and knowledge through active learningexercises. Students will learn more aboutthe tasks and responsibilities of a chemicalengineer through exploration learning inproblem solving, product and system building.CP5049Quality Management & StatisticsProvides students with the basic knowledgeof the management and organizational theorysuch as how a typical organisation functions,how resources are effectively managedusing the management functions and howproductivity can be raised through properplanning. The module also provides studentswith an understanding of the importantconcepts on quality assurance, statisticalanalysis and experimental design in thechemical manufacturing industry.CP5054Fuel Cells & Biomass EnergyAims to familiarise students with thetechnology and performance of hydrogenfuel cells. Students will learn the principle andoperation of five typical fuel cell types such asproton exchange membrane fuel cell, directmethanol fuel cell, phosphoric acid fuel cell,molten carbonate fuel cell and solid oxide fuelcell. The applications of fuel cells in a cleanenergy system will be discussed. Students willalso be provided with an overview of organicchemistry to understand biomass sources andtheir content. Types of biomass and methodsof energy extraction from biomass sourceswill be addressed. Use of biomass andenvironmental issues will be also discussed.CP5055Biopharmaceutical ManufacturingProvides students with a basic knowledgeand know-how for biopharmaceuticalmanufacturing by mammalian cellbioprocessing. In this module, studentswill learn the basic structure and cellularprocesses of a mammalian cell; role andprocess of medium design in mammaliancell bioprocessing; process of establishingmammalian cells as expression systems; andvarious process operations and considerationsinvolved in mammalian cell upstream anddownstream bioprocessing.CP5056WSH for Chemical EngineersProvides students with an understandingof the local legislation and important issuespertaining to workplace safety and healthincluding risk management and emergencyresponse. Emphasis is on preparing studentsfor work in the process industry using ablended learning strategy coupled withproblem based learning using scenariosrealistic and relevant to the process industry.CP5057Pharmaceutical MicrobiologyProvides students with an overview,basic knowledge and skills on aspects ofbiotechnology that are applicable to theproduction of biopharmaceuticals. Studentswill learn the fundamentals of cultivation ofhost cells (bacterial, fungal) and viruses,generic manipulation of host cells, as well asthe importance of contamination control.CP5058Fluid MechanicsCovers the fundamental concepts of fluid flow.Starting from a discussion of Newtonian andnon-Newtonian fluids, continuity equationand mass/ energy balances, students aregradually introduced to the use of Bernoulli’sand Darcy’s equations to solve fluid flowproblems. Subsequently, they are introducedto concepts of losses caused by skin and formfriction. Students are also exposed to sizingseries and parallel pipes networks. Extensivelaboratory practice and simulation exercisesare introduced to reinforce and enhance theirunderstanding in lectures and tutorials.CP5059Rotating EquipmentProvides students with a fundamentalunderstanding of the operating principles,design and specification of fluid transferequipment with emphasis on problem solvingand practical applications. The topics includepumps and compressors, mixers and steamturbines. Extensive laboratory practiceand simulation exercises are introduced toreinforce and enhance their understanding inlectures and tutorials.CP5060Separation ProcessesDevelops systems thinking and problemsolving skills from separation processesdesign, implementation, operational andexploration perspectives by drawing on thestudents’ underpinning knowledge of chemicalengineering principles. Students learn andapply the principles of mass transfer in solvingdistillation, absorption, liquid-liquid extraction,crystallization, drying and adsorption designproblems. Students will harness the power ofInformation and Communication Technology(ICT) tools such as MATLAB and DESIGNII or equivalent (such as HYSYS) to study awide range of cases involving mass transfer,heat transfer, momentum transfer andchemical reactions.
