Marine engineersoperate, maintain, repair and manage largeengineering power systems. The diplomaprogramme is designed to train our studentsto a level of competency whereby they areable to handle independently a wide rangeof engineering problems which requireknowledge from multiple disciplines.The Diploma in Marine Engineering is a three-year full-time course which includes a 6-weekIndustrial Training Programme with approved establishments, locally or overseas. The coursestructure is modularised to enhance learning and to provide flexibility of course design.Upon graduation, you can join a modernforeign-going ship and progress in stagesfrom junior to chief engineer by qualifyingfor Certificates of Competency issuedby the Maritime and Port Authority ofSingapore. The profession of a marineengineer is a challenging one that comeswith good monetary rewards. Becauseof the broad-based experience and earlyresponsibility gained as a ship’s engineer,you will also be well sought after in diverseshore-based industries.There are many further education opportunitieswith local and foreign universities to advanceyour career. Under the Singapore Institute ofTechnology (SIT) – Polytechnics partnership,supported by Ministry of Education, Diplomain Marine Engineering graduates may read theBachelor of Engineering in Marine Technologywith Honours in Marine Engineering orOffshore Engineering or Naval Architecturedegree awarded by Newcastle University (UK)locally in two years.Practical TrainingThe structure of the diploma programmeprovides for this in two ways:• Through intensive training in our fullyequipped workshops, simulators andlaboratories specifically designed forhands-on learning.• Through a structured 6-week IndustrialTraining Programme with approvedindustrial organisations. In addition,mandatory safety courses in Fire Fightingand Fire Prevention, Personal SurvivalTechniques, Elementary First Aid, PersonalSafety and Social Responsibility, andTanker Familiarisation are conductedduring the course.AssessmentStudents’ performance and progress areevaluated through a combination of in-courseand end-of-semester assessment. objectives and may take the form of writtenand practical examinations, assignments,projects and oral presentations.
