MA0103Maritime Personnel ManagementProvides students with an understanding ofthe importance of human element in shippingbusiness management. The role of humanas an individual or as a member of a groupin achieving shipping business objectiveswithin the context of the organisation andthe cultural, sociopolitical and economicenvironment is discussed.MA0105Ship ManagementProvides students with a thorough knowledgeand understanding of the business ofship management, local and internationalregulations including ISMA recommendations,crew management, technical management,commercial management, cost associatedwith shipping, voyage estimates and thegeneral planning and operational functions of aship manager.MA0110Ship OperationsTrains students how to prepare, embark andlaunch survival crafts. Students will be taughtthe use of all survival equipment carried onboard merchant navy ships. Additionally theywill be provided with a basic knowledge ofthe construction of various types of merchantnavy vessels.MA0111Fundamentals of CommercialShippingProvides students with an understandingof commercial geography, the basics inshipbroking and international trade practices,and classification societies.MA0112Logistics ManagementStudents will be able to demonstratea knowledge of the physical and othercomponents of transport systems, anunderstanding of the significance of freighttransport in a modern economy and theapplication of intermodal concepts. Theywill be able to analyse the employment,organisational and institutional structures inthe freight transport industry in <strong>Singapore</strong>.They will be able to appreciate the value of alogistics approach to delivery of goods.MA0113Port OperationsStudents will understand the role of portsand terminals in industrial development,multipurpose terminals, specialised terminalsand freeports. Visits will be arranged tocontainer, bulk and tanker terminals. Theywill understand features of transit sheds,warehouses, ICD for breakbulk, LCL and FCLoperations, stockpile arrangements for dry andliquid bulk commodities, specialised facilitiesfor hazardous goods and chemicals.MA0114Port AgencyProvides students with an understandingof the different types of port agencies anda port agent’s role, with particular referenceto operations in <strong>Singapore</strong>. Topics includeship documentation, cargo documentation,disbursements and office organisation.MA0115Law of Carriage of Goods by SeaProvides students with an understandingof the law relating to the carriage of goodsby sea and its underlying principles. Topicsinclude sources and application of law, basicfeatures of the <strong>Singapore</strong> legal system, andgeneral principles of the law of contractrelating to shipping, agency law, different typesof tortuous liability relating to shipping, basicfeatures and main legal aspects of the differentcharter parties and bills of lading and carriageof goods by sea acts.MA0116Port ManagementProvides students with an overview of thepolicy, planning, operations and managementof a port with particular reference to the Portof <strong>Singapore</strong>. Emphasis is on efficient planningand organisation of resources in order toachieve optimum performance.MA0117Supply Chain ManagementProvides students with an understandingof how supply chain management anddistribution channels play integral roles ina firm’s marketing strategy. Students willbe taught the concept of supply chainmanagement and the types of channelstructures. They will also learn the factors thatinfluence channel design, development andperformance as well as the role of logistics insupply chain management.MA0118Health Safety Security andEnvironmental Management (HSSE)Students will be given an appreciation onthe need for HSSE Management on boardships. Topics covered in the module includeknowledge of the key elements of a ship’squality assurance, health, safety and securitymanagement system as required per theISM code and the ISPS codes, internationallegislation on minimising and threat of pollutionat sea, and risk assessment in formulating allsafety procedures.MA0119Bunkering PracticesProvides students with an understandingof how to deal with bunker suppliers andbunker brokers, checking quality and quantityof bunker supplies, local and internationalregulations relating to bunkering practicesand choice of bunkering port as part ofvoyage planning.MA0120Marine InsuranceProvides students with an understanding ofmarine insurance and how different aspectsof marine insurance play a role in shipping.Topics covered include functions of marineinsurance in shipping, organisations ofinsurance market and companies, InstituteClauses and Common covers for ships,General Average claims, P & I Club, andmarine pollution protection schemes.MA0121Maritime Offshore OperationsProvides students with an overview of theoffshore industry and related operations.Emphasis will be placed on the types ofoffshore vessels and their operations includingseismic survey, oil exploration and pipe layingmethods, a typical organisational structureof offshore management company, basictraining requirements of offshore personneland international organisations influencing theoffshore industry e.g. OPITO.MA0122Electronic CommerceProvides students with the basicconcepts, implementation and operationof information systems development, withparticular reference to information systemsused in the shipping and transportationbusiness. GMDSS, VTIS, Portnet, Tradenetand other workflow systems will be coveredin this module.MA0123Maritime LawProvides students with an understandingof the law affecting the various aspects ofshipping business.
