Chapter 4 – Road Design and Technical CriteriaSection 4.8 Emergency Access Requirements4.8 EMERGENCY ACCESS REQUIREMENTSAny emergency access not on public roads shall be provided in accordance with the EmergencyAccess Section in the Land Use Code or in accordance with the requirements of the appropriateFire District. The following requirements shall be considered minimum standards unless theappropriate Fire Authority approves an alternative design.4.8.1 SlopeThe slope of the fire lanes shall be a minimum of 0.5 percent and a maximum of 8percent.4.8.2 Cross SlopeThe Cross Slope of the fire lanes shall be minimum of 1.0 percent and a maximum of 4.0percent.4.8.3 Lane WidthThe lane width shall be a minimum of 20 feet from the edge of the roadway to edge ofthe roadway and shall be in an access easement. The access easement shall have aminimum width of 40 feet. The lane widths may be required to be increased throughhorizontal curves to accommodate fire truck passage.4.8.4 Vertical ClearanceThere shall be a minimum of 13.5 feet of vertical clearance over the entire fire lane.4.8.5 BarricadeThe fire lane shall have a barricade at one or both ends, but it must be approved inwriting by the appropriate Fire District and the Engineer.4.8.6 Roadway SurfaceThe surface of the roadway must be a surface in accordance to the requirements of theappropriate Fire District. The minimum surfacing requirement is 4” of Class 5 aggregatebase course. All access roadways shall be maintained and kept clear for emergency useat all times.4.9 INTERSECTIONSIntersections shall be designed to provide for the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.This section is based on criteria from the Institute of Transportation Engineers TrafficEngineering Handbook and AASHTO’s “A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways andStreets”.4.9.1 Intersection Type and Design Criteria4.9.1.1 Intersection Control TypeIntersection control type shall be determined by standard warrants included in theManual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and as directed by the County.Modern Roundabouts are considered a form of traffic control and the CountyEngineer may require consideration (and if appropriate, construction) of aLarimer County Rural Area Road Standards Page 4-8October 22, 2007
