Subgrade Support Tests1) R-Value Hveem Stabilometer – AASHTO T190 or ASTM D28442) Swell /consolidation – ASTM D2435 or AASHTO T2163) Soil and Ground Water conditions, including evidence of seasonalelevation variation4) Recommendations and Discussions.5) Sulfates5.3.3 Soil SamplesSoil borings for the investigation shall be taken in the existing or proposed roadway rightof-way.A minimum of two borings shall be obtained per roadway section, and thedistance between borings shall not exceed 500 feet. Samples shall be taken at the depththat will serve as subgrade for new road construction but in no case less than 5-feet.Borings shall extend deeper as required to determine if bedrock and/or high groundwaterlevels are design concerns. Multiple samples shall be taken alternately among lanes andevenly spaced. The Engineer may require more frequent testing. If the roadway will beplaced on fill material, the fill material shall meet a minimum R value of 15 and thematerial shall be certified and tested prior to embanking the new roadway. Material thatdoes not meet the minimum specifications will be rejected.5.3.4 Soil GroupingSoil samples may be grouped based upon the AASHTO classification, group index andlocation within the area investigated. Groupings shall not mix samples with differentAASHTO Classifications. (For example, soils with swell potential greater than 2% maynot be grouped).Composite samples may be obtained by mixing portions of each sample within a soilgroup to provide a uniform sample of the soil group. Composite samples shall besubjected to classification testing as described in the following section. Compositeremolded samples shall not be used for swell/consolidation testing. A minimum of onesoluble sulfate test shall be run on each composite sample or as directed by theEngineer.5.3.5 Classification TestingSoils shall be visually classified and shall be tested to determine the properties. Chapter 5 – Geotechnical Standards and Pavement DesignSection 5.3 Soils Investigation5.3.6 Subgrade Support TestingThe following subgrade testing shall be conducted:5.3.6.1 Hveem StabilometerTest individual subgrade or composite samples to determine the subgrade supportvalue using Hveem Stabilometer (R-Value) testing. The design R-value shall be at300 psi (2070 kPa) exudation pressure. Reported data shall include:a. Test procedure reference.b. Dry density and moisture content for each sample.c. Expansion pressure for each sample.d.
