Lectures on the HolocaustIn the indictment the prosecution requested to have my book Lectureson the Holocaust seized and destroyed. In my view it is importantfor the court to understand what that means, in case you decide here toseize my book indeed. A while ago I gave you a photocopy containing anewspaper article published in the Austrian weekly Zur Zeit. 167 Thisarticle reports on how an academic anthology published in commemorationof the German historian Prof. Dr. Hellmut Diwald was seized bymeans of a court order, because it contains a contribution by Prof. Heppsporting a footnote in Latin in which Prof. Hepp declares to doubt theveracity of the story about gas chambers for the extermination of Jewsin extermination camps of the Third Reich. This footnote in Latin wasallegedly inflammatory. It is a mystery to me, though, how a few sentencesin a footnote in the Latin language can incite anybody nowadays,as hardly anybody understands that language. Fact is that the book wasseized for that very reason and that the confiscated copies were subsequentlydestroyed in a waste incinerator under police supervision. Policesupervision was probably considered necessary to ensure that noneof the garbage men would read or maybe even sell the book instead ofburning it.The contribution by Prof. Hepp which was considered offensive incidentallyis the same as the one I have quoted earlier regardingAuschwitz as Germany’s Great Taboo.
