Now the proponents of the theory have to prove not onlythe original thesis but the support thesis as well, which in addition requiresproof for two claims. In anticipation of your objections, let meadd here that no one will contest the fact that a retreating army, approachingdefeat, could and would potentially destroy all kinds ofthings – and not just evidence of crimes but on principle everything thatcould be helpful to the enemy. And there is also no dispute about thefact that criminals attempt to destroy evidence of their crimes. However,this does not relieve the scientist of the duty to gather evidence. As aresult of the destruction of evidence, this may well be more difficult,which is surely tragic. But the absence of evidence is no substitute forevidence, and this absence can most certainly not serve to undergirdincriminating claims. In addition I may point out that the auxiliary theoryof a complete destruction of evidence by the SS is not true, as isproven by the Soviet capture of the complete archives of the CentralConstruction Office of Auschwitz or of the War Archives of the WaffenSS in Prague by the Red Army.Karl Popper systematically investigated the diverse methods of immunizingtheories. 93 He described four main tactics used to immunizetheories, which are all unscientific, that is inadmissible, and which Iwill describe in the following:1.
