GERMAR RUDOLF, RESISTANCE IS OBLIGATORYleagues which I have already briefly mentioned and about which I alsoreport in my book. 108When, during the late 1980s/early 1990s, the Leuchter Report wasgarnering considerable attention due to its results of chemical analyses,the Polish National Auschwitz Museum commissioned Prof. Markiewiczof the Institute for Forensic Investigation in Krakow to scrutinizeLeuchter’s investigations. A pilot study performed in 1991 came to disquietingresults, so that it has never been published. This study has beenmade public only through an indiscretion. 109 A second, more thoroughseries of investigations was finally more successful. It was published in1994 and concluded that in the delousing chambers, where Zyklon Bhad been used exclusively to kill lice, as well as in the alleged homicidalgas chambers of Auschwitz comparable amounts of reaction productsleft by Zyklon B could be found. The authors claimed that thisproves that both locations must have had a similar history, that is: ahigh and repeated exposure to the insecticide Zyklon B. With this, thePolish researchers believed to have proven homicidal mass gassings inAuschwitz. 110The problem with their chemical analysis was that they had deviatedfrom internationally acknowledged standards by using an analyticmethod which did not permit the detection of the relevant, long-termstable reaction products. The Poles had deliberately chosen this methodprecisely because they did not want to detect these products. As a reasonfor this they stated that they could not understand how these compoundscould have formed to begin with.The scandalous thing about this was not only that a researcher hasthe duty to first understand his subject before beginning to draw conclusionsabout it. In fact, the Poles quoted results of my research that I hadpublished more than a year earlier, in which, on the basis of generallyavailable chemical and scientific literature, I had explained in detail thevery things that the Poles had not understood. 111 But the Poles were not108 Ibid., pp. 238-240.109 J.
