One may assume thathe considered the veritably exorbitant {p. 16} figures of this witness ascounterproductive and tacitly undertook a revision.In his anthology Antisemitismus in Deutschland [Anti-Semitism inGermany] Wolfgang Benz firmly insists that, “with the exception ofsoap, which has long since been revealed as a legend,” all possiblemonstrosities are proven realities, but most recently, in a widely disseminatedappeal by a noted movie director on occasion of 8 May 1995,it was still claimed as undisputable what is a “legend” even to WolfgangBenz, namely the production of soap from Jewish human fat. 11Here as well a part of “published opinion” deviates far from the resultof established science.Several years ago, however, a news item was published in all newspapersthat the official memorial plaques at Auschwitz had beenchanged, because the figure of four million victims given on them couldno longer be maintained and had to be reduced to one and a half million.But long before that a highly renowned researcher like Raul Hilberghad said with strong emphasis during a congress in Stuttgart in1984: “2.5 million Jews were not gassed in Auschwitz. That is an impossibility.I estimate the number of victims at Auschwitz at roughlyone million Jews.” 12During the same event Wolfgang Scheffler pointed out that ZyklonB was, “which is often overlooked,” a widely used and simple disinfestationagent; 13 hence, so one has to conclude, the many photographs of{p. 17} cans with the label “Vorsicht Gift!” (Caution Poison!) are not atall evidence for the killing of humans.Eberhard Jäckel ascertained that there are numerous indications thatGöring, Himmler, Goebbels and many other had qualms when the killingswere initiated 14 – if that is correct, how then could the almost popu-271
