IntroductionChapter IV<strong>The</strong> Study FindingsThis study aimed at evaluating the current INSET programme provided for UNRWA Englishteachers in regards to contemporary trends. To achieve this aim, the study attempted to answer sixquestions through using three tools. This chapter introduces the results <strong>of</strong> the study tools asstatistically treated. It illustrates the SPSS formula used in treating the data including,frequencies, percentages and statistical tests as Sign, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis.Tables are used to present the treated data. Through such statistical treatment, an overallpicture <strong>of</strong> the programme is provided, where aspects <strong>of</strong> weaknesses and strengths areidentified and classified.Examination <strong>of</strong> Research Questions4.1 <strong>The</strong> First Question: What are the main aims and features <strong>of</strong> the current in-servicetraining programme available for UNRWA English teachers?To answer this descriptive question, the researcher utilized information taken from two mainsources involving; the <strong>of</strong>ficial website <strong>of</strong> UNRWA and an interview conducted with two<strong>of</strong>ficials at EDC on 21 st <strong>of</strong> November 2010 as shown in Appendix (17). In what follows a fulldescription <strong>of</strong> UNRWA Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and the <strong>Education</strong>al Development Centre isprovided, along with a detailed explanation <strong>of</strong> INSET programmes planning in general andEnglish INSET programmes in particular.A. <strong>The</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>Since the foundation <strong>of</strong> the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) forPalestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in 1950, education has been its main preoccupation in <strong>Gaza</strong>Strip. <strong>The</strong> agency helped to preserve the right <strong>of</strong> education for hundreds <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong>Palestinian refugees for more than six decades. A major role in this area has been assigned tothe Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> established by UNRWA in 1964. <strong>The</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> was- 118 -
