teachers in the light <strong>of</strong> the contemporary trends. <strong>The</strong> study sample consisted <strong>of</strong> 390 teacherswho responded to a questionnaire <strong>of</strong> eight domains. <strong>The</strong> study results proved severalshortcomings within these programmes as theoretical content, lack <strong>of</strong> teacher involvement inthe planning process, lecturing styles domination and lack <strong>of</strong> facilities. To handle thecitedshortcomings, the researcher recommended focusing on issues as practicality,technology integration and systematic evaluation.In the same Palestinian context, Al-Ajez and Al–Banna (2003) conducted a study toevaluate the current inservice training programme available to lower elementary and upperelementary teachers in governmental schools. <strong>The</strong> study also aimed at suggesting a futureinservice training programme in the light <strong>of</strong> the teachers‟ pr<strong>of</strong>essional needs. <strong>The</strong> studysample involved 275 teachers who responded to a questionnaire in two parts. Data analysisshowed that teachers were not satisfied with the current programmes due to severalinadequacies as lack <strong>of</strong> incentives and proper facilities. <strong>The</strong> researchers concluded withseveral practical recommendations as, establishing well- equipped training institutions,providing sufficient incentives, proper planning, and carrying out needs assessment prior tothe intended training programmes.A second study performed by the same researcher -Al-Ajez (2004) - aimed at investigatingthe in-service training workshops for secondary teachers in high schools in <strong>Gaza</strong>Governorates. It also aimed at identifying the main shortcoming <strong>of</strong> these workshops fromteachers and supervisors‟ point <strong>of</strong> views. <strong>The</strong> study followed a descriptive analyticalapproach with a questionnaire involving 455 teachers and 80 supervisors. Result analysisshowed several shortcomings as; theoretical content, lack <strong>of</strong> teacher involvement and underqualifiedtrainers. <strong>The</strong> researcher recommended more teacher involvement, verifying trainingtechniques, providing incentives, establishing specialized training centres and most- 61 -
