PrefaceOne of the looming challenges in organizingan international conference on permafrost isdetermining the timetable. What should be thedeadline for abstract and paper submittals? Earlyin the process we agreed that we wanted theproceedings published before the conference,and this challenge has become more taxing as thesize of the conference has increased. We made aconcerted effort to compress the timetable so thatpapers published in the proceedings were to besubmitted only eight and one-half months beforethe conference. Still, there are those who want toreport on their latest research at the permafrostconference. In the recent past, the <strong>International</strong>Permafrost Association (IPA) introduced theconcept of extended abstracts (two pages inthis case) that were published in a separatedocument. The idea was that the collection wouldrepresent the latest in permafrost research. It isclear that some researchers, finding the Englishlanguage challenging, opted instead to submit theshorter extended abstract in lieu of the six-pagemanuscript. We have one hundred eighty-fourextended abstracts that will be presented at the<strong>Ninth</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Permafrost;this can be compared with the three hundred fiftyeightpapers published in the proceedings. As inthe past, the extended abstracts were not reviewed,and except for some minor changes (formatting,deletion of an abstract in the extended abstract,etc.), they are published as they were submitted.As with the proceedings and abstract volumes,we appreciate all the assistance we received fromThomas Alton and Fran Pedersen in producingthis volume.
