Chapter 3 | Past performance <strong>of</strong> air services on regional air routesWestern AustraliaOverall, the number <strong>of</strong> revenue passengers on intrastate air routes in WesternAustralia increased from 0.67 million in 1984 to 1.2 million in 2005, an average annualgrowth rate <strong>of</strong> 2.9 per cent over the past 22 years. The number <strong>of</strong> routesreduced from 119 in 1984 to 53 in 2005. There were 10 airlines serving intrastate airroutes in 1984 <strong>and</strong> nine airlines in 2005.As in other states <strong>and</strong> territories, there has been a high turnover rate in airlines inregional Western Australia over the years (Table 3.9). Sky West is the only longst<strong>and</strong>ingairline which has operated services continuously since 1984.Major airlines serving regional Western Australia in 2005 were Sky West Airlines,Qantas Airlines <strong>and</strong> Skippers Aviation. Each served 26, 21 <strong>and</strong> 9 routes respectively.Qantas Airlines carried close to 63 per cent <strong>and</strong> Sky West carried 25 per cent <strong>of</strong>revenue passengers on regional air routes within Western Australia.Major regional air routes within Western Australia in 2005 were Perth–Karratha,Perth–Kalgoorlie, Perth–Broome <strong>and</strong> Perth–Port Hedl<strong>and</strong>. All carried more than100 000 revenue passengers a year.93
