GlossaryState <strong>and</strong> territory (S/T)Statistical Division (SD)States <strong>and</strong> Territories are the largest spatial unit in theAustralian St<strong>and</strong>ard Geographic Classification (ASGC) mainstructure. Six states <strong>and</strong> five territories are recognised in theASGC structure: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensl<strong>and</strong>,South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, NorthernTerritory, Australian Capital Territory, Jervis Bay Territory,<strong>and</strong> the external territories <strong>of</strong> Christmas Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Cocos(Keeling) Isl<strong>and</strong>s (ABS 2001b).A general purpose spatial unit, in the Australian St<strong>and</strong>ardGeographic Classification (ASGC), <strong>and</strong> largest <strong>and</strong> moststable spatial unit within each state <strong>and</strong> territory (S/T). SDsconsist <strong>of</strong> one or more Statistical Subdivisions (SSD) <strong>and</strong>aggregate to form S/Ts (ABS 2001b).Statistical Local Area (SLA) A general-purpose spatial unit in the Australian St<strong>and</strong>ardGeographic Classification (ASGC).
