Chapter 4 | Access to regional air services4.2.2 Interstate air services on regional routesFigure 4.2a <strong>and</strong> 4.2b shows the network <strong>of</strong> interstate air services on regional routesin 2005. Overall, the number <strong>of</strong> regional air routes increased from 91 routes in 2000to 113 routes in 2005.The number <strong>of</strong> regional air routes with an average <strong>of</strong> at least three return flights aweek increased from 50 routes in 2000 to 55 routes in 2005. As expected, such regionalroutes were mostly radiating out from airports at major cities (Figure 4.2a). Theseair routes usually carried between 50 000 to 500 000 revenue passengers a year. Highdensity regional routes such as Hobart–Melbourne, Cairns–Sydney <strong>and</strong> Launceston–Melbourne carried more than half a million revenue passengers in 2005.<strong>Regional</strong> air routes with an average <strong>of</strong> less than three return flights a week increased from41 routes in 2000 to 58 routes in 2005. Most <strong>of</strong> these routes radiated out from airports atmajor cities or large regional airports to other regional airports (Figure 4.2b).
