Growth RequestsInitiative: Speech TherapistsEstablish 120 MOE for school age and 24 MOE for preschool positionsfor a total of 144 MOE for speech therapists positions in <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong>.Implementation Timeline & Budget Needed:<strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong> MOE Amount CodeSpeech therapy is required based on state and federal mandates. Speech/Language Pathologists deliver speech therapy services as specifi ed in astudent’s IEP. Speech pathologists are an integral part of a school’s teambecause of their knowledge of speech/language development and how itimpacts a student’s academic, social and/or vocational development.Currently we have 105 Speech Pathologists serving school-age studentsand 20.5 serving preschool students. We are contracting for an additional43 hours per week.Current Funding Formula:<strong>School</strong> Age• Currently, approximately 5,100 are receiving speech/languageservices. This equates to 4% of the total school-age population.• Using a projected enrollment in <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong> of 136,<strong>08</strong>6 we expect toprovide speech services to 5,443 students. This would require115 positions. We currently have 105 positions and this wouldmean 10 additional school-age speech positions for <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong>. For20<strong>08</strong>-09, six new positions will be needed and eight additionalpositions will be needed for 2009-10.Preschool• Preschool positions are based on a combination of evaluationsand direct services. In 2004-05, preschool speech pathologistsevaluated 614 students and provided services to an additional381. During the 2005-06 school year, 739 evaluations wereconducted and 502 students received services. This is a growthof 125 evaluations and an additional 121 students receivingspeech services. Using an average growth rate of 4.3% forevaluations and services, we expect to provide services to 1,294students in <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong>.
