Growth RequestsInitiative: Bus DriversBus Drivers – an additional 30 positions for 6 new schools, two 9th gradecenters, and additional growth for <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong>, 3 new schools for 20<strong>08</strong>-09,and 5 new schools for 2009-10. The addition of Nextels for new busdriver staff. Increase in MOE (months of employment) for drivers at newyear-round schools.Current Funding Formula:Start-up routes for all new schools are as follows:Elementary schools = 8 routesMiddle schools = 15 routesHigh <strong>School</strong>s = 15 routesYear-round schools hire 12-month drivers and traditional schools hire10-month drivers.For new positions, use the 7 standard hours and the beginning salary of$11.49 for 240 days.Addition of Nextels for all new bus drivers:$15.97 per phone per month for no cellular use -$15.97 x 30 x 12 = $5,749$15.97 x 24 x 12 = $4,599$15.97 x 42 x 12 = $8,049Increase in Months of EmploymentNorthern Area needs:63 10-month positions will go to 12-month positions = 126 additionalmonthsWestern Area needs:84 10-month positions will go to 12-month positions = 168 additionalmonthsSouthern Area needs:40 10-month positions will go to 12-month positions = 80 additionalmonths12 month positions use 7 standard hrs and mid point range for salary$12.85grow and add schools, additional drivers will need to be hired to handleadditional routes.• <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong> has 5 new school sites being opened - 3 year-round elementaryschools, and 2 year-round middle schools. Requests for drivers aredone on a school-by-school basis based on geographical locations andbus tiers. It has been determined that the 3 new elementary schoolsopening in <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong> can be absorbed into existing routes, thus enhancingthe effi ciency of existing runs.• The two new middle schools for <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong> will require the addition of 15routes per school or 30 positions for 12 months each.• Two ninth grade centers at <strong>Wake</strong>fi eld and <strong>Wake</strong> Forest will be absorbedinto the existing routes.• 20<strong>08</strong>-09 will follow the formula of 8 routes per elementary school (12-month positions).• 2009-10 will follow the formula of 8 routes per elementary (12-monthpositions) and 15 routes per high school (10-month positions)Communication between drivers and managers is essential to the effi cientoperation of a large bus fl eet. This instant communication allows fasterresponse for any type of emergency and increases the safety levels forstudents and staff.As <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>System</strong> (WCPSS) continues to grow andadd year-round schools, additional drivers will need to be converted from10 to 12-month drivers in <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>08</strong> to handle addition of routes and rundays. As the growth of year-round schools continues, more 10-monthdrivers must now drive 12 months.As the <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>System</strong> (WCPSS) continues to222
