Generally NGOs are weak and lack thesupport and expertise necessary to develop bigger projects.2.3. Prevention and rais<strong>in</strong>g awarenessThe government, <strong>in</strong>ternational organisations and NGOs have undertaken anumber of activities on prevention and to raise awareness. Most of these havebeen based on experiences and <strong>in</strong>formation from other countries <strong>in</strong> theregion, rather than on research and assessment of the situation <strong>in</strong> FYR Macedonia.There is little or no evaluation of the effectiveness or impact of campaignsto raise awareness beyond a general assessment of knowledge of theexistence of traffick<strong>in</strong>g.FormerYugoslavRepublic ofMacedoniaActivities to raise awareness organised by the Ombudsperson for Childrenhave <strong>in</strong>cluded:• Information pamphlet on Child Rights which <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>in</strong>formation ontraffick<strong>in</strong>g;• Round tables on domestic violence and child abuse organised with<strong>in</strong>the framework of preparations for the Second World Congress aga<strong>in</strong>stCommercial Sexual Exploitation of Children <strong>in</strong> Yokohama <strong>in</strong> December2001. The work was divided <strong>in</strong>to three work<strong>in</strong>g groups: policy andlegislation; identification and assessment; and access to support/community based services.The M<strong>in</strong>istry of Labour and Social Policy’s Unit for Development of GenderEquality has developed a National Plan of Action for Gender Equality, which<strong>in</strong>cludes anti-traffick<strong>in</strong>g provisions.UNICEF has developed activities for the children who are potential victims oftraffick<strong>in</strong>g:• Trauma awareness tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for professionals who come <strong>in</strong> contact withthe victims of traffick<strong>in</strong>g;• Child rights tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for professionals carried out by NGO representativestra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> child rights;• Education for children and young people on the dangers of sexualexploitation <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the risk of HIV/AIDS and STIs;• Lectures from the police for young people at schools and youth centres;• Public <strong>in</strong>formation campaign <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation for young people,posters, leaflets, stickers, TV spots.IOM activities <strong>in</strong>cluded rais<strong>in</strong>g of awareness, NGO capacity build<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>formation:• Campaign to raise awareness <strong>in</strong> the general public through publicationsand leaflets and target<strong>in</strong>g KFOR soldiers through calendars forKFOR;• Regional Sem<strong>in</strong>ar for Prevention of <strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong> and Victim Support <strong>in</strong>order to foster a national network for the prevention of traffick<strong>in</strong>g andvictim support;• Capacity build<strong>in</strong>g with local NGOs and authorities;• Data base on the scope of traffick<strong>in</strong>g and illegal migration <strong>in</strong> theregion.The NGOs La Strada Macedonia and Open Gate are plann<strong>in</strong>g a jo<strong>in</strong>t preventioncampaign <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g publish<strong>in</strong>g posters and post cards. The campaign will bebased on the experiences of other La Strada organisations <strong>in</strong> the region andaimed at the potential victims of traffick<strong>in</strong>g. A hotl<strong>in</strong>e/<strong>in</strong>formation l<strong>in</strong>e abouttraffick<strong>in</strong>g will provide <strong>in</strong>formation about agencies offer<strong>in</strong>g jobs <strong>in</strong> foreign111
