<strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Human</strong> Be<strong>in</strong>gs<strong>in</strong> <strong>Southeastern</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>Bosnia andHerzegov<strong>in</strong>atices to ensure that traffickers (and their collaborators) are prosecuted andthat victims are protected.UNMIBH established STOP – the UN Special <strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Operations Programmeunit <strong>in</strong> IPTF - <strong>in</strong> July 2001. STOP Teams are work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all districts and cooperat<strong>in</strong>gwith local police to monitor bars and nightclubs and organise raids.OSCE is provid<strong>in</strong>g support to the International <strong>Human</strong> Rights Law Group(IHRLG) for the follow<strong>in</strong>g:• Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for lawyers “Enhanc<strong>in</strong>g Legal Protection for <strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Victims<strong>in</strong> BiH”;• Increas<strong>in</strong>g awareness among defence lawyers;• Establish<strong>in</strong>g a group of the defence lawyers specialised <strong>in</strong> traffick<strong>in</strong>gissues;• Develop<strong>in</strong>g guidel<strong>in</strong>es for the protection of trafficked persons that willbe distributed to all courts and prosecutors offices.• As part of its gender sensitisation tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, the local NGO MedicaZenica tra<strong>in</strong>ed police, judges and prosecutors <strong>in</strong> Zenica <strong>in</strong> 1999, and<strong>in</strong> Mostar <strong>in</strong> 2001, on violence aga<strong>in</strong>st women and children, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gvictims of traffick<strong>in</strong>g.• IHRLG has conducted numerous tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions on traffick<strong>in</strong>g andhuman rights issues. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was developed primarily for NGOs,but participants also <strong>in</strong>cluded judges, prosecutors, journalists, membersof the police and social workers. Presently it is work<strong>in</strong>g on aproject to strengthen the capacity of the RING network to support itsadvocacy for the adoption of appropriate anti-traffick<strong>in</strong>g laws. IHRLGis also work<strong>in</strong>g on a review of exist<strong>in</strong>g legislation relevant to traffick<strong>in</strong>g,<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g immigration, civil and crim<strong>in</strong>al law, health and socialwelfare.74
