Information collected frommaintenance records provides practical examples—goodand bad—that illustrate the design principles that resultin maximum maintainability. The designer can use theseprinciples to build maintainability into materiel andthereby contribute substantially to solving the Army’smaintenance problem.Chapter 1 is an introduction to the principle of maintainability,its importance, and methods of achieving it.The following 10 chapters simplification, standardizationand interchangeability, accessibility, modularization,identification and labeling, testability and diagnostictechniques, preventive maintenance, human factors,and environmental factors---describe in detail their rolein achieving the maintainability principle.This handbook was developed under the auspices ofthe Army Materiel Command’s Engineering DesignHandbook Program, under the direction of the USArmy Management Training Activity.
