Number Seven Testimony <strong>for</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>Chapter 53 - The North and <strong>the</strong> SouthJanuary 4, 1862, I was shown some things in regard to our nation. My attentionwas called to <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn rebellion. The South had prepared <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>for</strong> a fierceconflict, while <strong>the</strong> North were asleep as to <strong>the</strong>ir true feelings. Be<strong>for</strong>e PresidentLincoln’s administration commenced, great advantage was taken by <strong>the</strong> South. The<strong>for</strong>mer administration planned and managed <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> South to rob <strong>the</strong> North of <strong>the</strong>irimplements of war. They had two objects <strong>for</strong> so doing: 1. They were contemplatinga determined rebellion, and must prepare <strong>for</strong> it; 2. When <strong>the</strong>y should rebel, <strong>the</strong> Northwould be wholly unprepared. They would thus gain time, and by <strong>the</strong>ir violent threatsand ruthless course <strong>the</strong>y thought <strong>the</strong>y could so intimidate <strong>the</strong> North that <strong>the</strong>y would beobliged to yield to <strong>the</strong>m and let <strong>the</strong>m have everything <strong>the</strong>ir own way.The North did not understand <strong>the</strong> bitter, dreadful hatred of <strong>the</strong> South toward <strong>the</strong>m,and were unprepared <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir deep-laid plots. The North had boasted of <strong>the</strong>ir strengthand ridiculed <strong>the</strong> idea of <strong>the</strong> South leaving <strong>the</strong> Union. They considered it like <strong>the</strong>threats of a willful, stubborn child, and thought that <strong>the</strong> South would soon come to<strong>the</strong>ir senses, and, becoming sick of leaving <strong>the</strong> Union, would with humble253
