Parents, thiscourse pursued toward your children destroys <strong>the</strong>ir cheerfulness and ambition. Theydo your bidding, not from love, but because <strong>the</strong>y dare not do o<strong>the</strong>rwise. Their heartis not in <strong>the</strong> matter. It is a drudgery, instead of a pleasure, and this often leads <strong>the</strong>mto <strong>for</strong>get to follow out all your directions, which increases your irritation, and makesit still worse <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> children. The faultfinding is repeated, <strong>the</strong>ir bad conduct arrayedbe<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong>m in glowing colors, until discouragement comes over <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong>y are notparticular whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y please or not. A spirit of “I don’t care” seizes <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong>yseek that pleasure and enjoyment away from home, away from <strong>the</strong>ir parents, which<strong>the</strong>y do not find at home. They mingle with street company and are soon as corrupt as<strong>the</strong> worst.Upon whom rests this great sin? If home had been made attractive, if <strong>the</strong> parentshad manifested affection <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir children, and with kindness found employment <strong>for</strong><strong>the</strong>m, and in love instructed <strong>the</strong>m how to obey <strong>the</strong>ir wishes, <strong>the</strong>y would have touchedan answering chord in <strong>the</strong>ir hearts, and willing feet and hands and hearts would all havereadily obeyed <strong>the</strong>m. By controlling <strong>the</strong>mselves, and speaking kindly, and praising <strong>the</strong>children when <strong>the</strong>y try to do right, parents may encourage <strong>the</strong>ir ef<strong>for</strong>ts, make <strong>the</strong>mvery happy, and throw over <strong>the</strong> family circle a charm which will chase away everydark shadow and bring cheerful sunlight in.Parents sometimes excuse <strong>the</strong>ir own wrong course because <strong>the</strong>y do not feel well.They are nervous, and think <strong>the</strong>y cannot be patient and calm, and speak pleasantly. Inthis <strong>the</strong>y deceive <strong>the</strong>mselves and please Satan, who exults that <strong>the</strong> grace of God is notregarded by <strong>the</strong>m as sufficient to overcome natural infirmities. They can and should atall times control <strong>the</strong>mselves. God requires it of <strong>the</strong>m. They should realize that when<strong>the</strong>y yield to impatience and fretfulness <strong>the</strong>y cause385
