stand upon your own dignity and feel so self-sufficient that you cannot take <strong>the</strong> adviceand counsel of experienced fellow laborers.<strong>You</strong>r wife has been no special help to you, but ra<strong>the</strong>r a hindrance. Had she receivedand heeded <strong>the</strong> testimonies given her more than two years ago she would now be astrong helper with you in <strong>the</strong> gospel. But she has not received and really acted uponthat testimony. Had she done this, her course would have been entirely different. Shehas not been consecrated to God. She loves her ease, shuns burdens, and does not denyherself. She indulges in indolence, and her example is not worthy of imitation, but is aninjury to <strong>the</strong> cause of God. At times she exerts a strong influence over you, especiallyif she feels homesick or discontented. Again, in church affairs she has an influenceover you. She <strong>for</strong>ms her opinion of this bro<strong>the</strong>r or that sister, and expresses dislike orstrong attachment, while it has frequently been <strong>the</strong> case that <strong>the</strong> very ones she takesinto her heart have been a source of great trial to <strong>the</strong> church. Her unconsecrated stateleads her to feel very strong attachments to those who manifest great confidence andlove <strong>for</strong> her, while precious souls whom God loves may be passed coldly by becauseno fervent expressions of attachment are heard from <strong>the</strong>m toward herself and Bro<strong>the</strong>rF. And yet <strong>the</strong> love of <strong>the</strong>se very souls is true and is to be more highly prized than thatof those who make such protestations of <strong>the</strong>ir regard. The opinion your wife <strong>for</strong>ms hasa great influence on your mind. <strong>You</strong> often take it <strong>for</strong> granted that she is correct andthink as she thinks and act in church matters accordingly.<strong>You</strong> must exemplify <strong>the</strong> life of Christ, <strong>for</strong> solemn responsibilities rest upon you.<strong>You</strong>r wife is responsible to God <strong>for</strong> her course. If she is a hindrance to you shemust render an account to God. Sometimes she arouses and humbles herself be<strong>for</strong>eGod and is a real help; but she soon falls back into <strong>the</strong> same inactive state, shunningresponsibilities, and excusing herself627
