Yet <strong>for</strong> myselfI determined to follow my convictions of duty. I could but feel that it was contrary to<strong>the</strong> spirit of <strong>the</strong> gospel to devote God-given time and means to <strong>the</strong> decoration of ourpersons—that humility and self-denial would be more befitting those whose sins hadcost <strong>the</strong> infinite sacrifice of <strong>the</strong> Son of God.*****Chapter III - Feelings of DespairIn June, 1842, Mr. Miller gave his second course of lectures in Portland. I felt ita great privilege to attend <strong>the</strong>se lectures, <strong>for</strong> I had fallen under discouragements anddid not feel prepared to meet my Saviour. This second course created much moreexcitement in <strong>the</strong> city than <strong>the</strong> first. With few exceptions <strong>the</strong> different denominationsclosed <strong>the</strong> doors of <strong>the</strong>ir churches against Mr. Miller. Many discourses from <strong>the</strong>various pulpits sought to expose <strong>the</strong> alleged fanatical errors of <strong>the</strong> lecturer; but crowdsof anxious listeners attended his meetings, while many were unable to enter <strong>the</strong> house.The congregations were unusually quiet and attentive. His manner of preachingwas not flowery or oratorical, but he dealt in plain and startling facts that roused hishearers from <strong>the</strong>ir careless indifference. He supported his statements and <strong>the</strong>ories byScripture proof as he progressed.
