can succeed in lulling one minister to carnal security, and by so doing divert his mindfrom <strong>the</strong> work, or deceive him with regard to his own true condition be<strong>for</strong>e God, hehas accomplished much.I saw that <strong>the</strong> cause of God was not progressing as it might and as it should.Ministers fail to take hold of <strong>the</strong> work with that energy, devotion, and decidedperseverance which <strong>the</strong> importance of <strong>the</strong> work demands. They have a vigilantadversary to contend with whose diligence and perseverance are untiring. The feebleef<strong>for</strong>t of ministers and people can bear no comparison with those of <strong>the</strong>ir adversary, <strong>the</strong>devil. On one side are <strong>the</strong> ministers who battle <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> right and have <strong>the</strong> help of Godand holy angels. They should be strong and valiant, and wholly devoted to <strong>the</strong> causein which <strong>the</strong>y are engaged, having no separate interest. They should not be entangledwith <strong>the</strong> things of this life, that <strong>the</strong>y may please Him who hath chosen <strong>the</strong>m to besoldiers.On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side are Satan and his angels, with all his agents on earth, who makeevery ef<strong>for</strong>t and use every device to advance error and wrong, and to cover up <strong>the</strong>irhideousness and de<strong>for</strong>mity with a pleasing garb. Selfishness, hypocrisy, and everyspecies of deception, Satan clo<strong>the</strong>s with a garment of apparent truth and righteousness,and triumphs in his success, even with ministers and people who profess to understandhis wiles. The greater distance <strong>the</strong>y keep from Christ <strong>the</strong>ir great Leader, <strong>the</strong> less <strong>the</strong>yare like Him in character, <strong>the</strong> more close is <strong>the</strong>ir resemblance in life and character to<strong>the</strong> servants of <strong>the</strong>ir great adversary, and <strong>the</strong> more sure is he of <strong>the</strong>m at last. While <strong>the</strong>yprofess to be servants of Christ, <strong>the</strong>y are servants of sin. Some ministers have <strong>the</strong>irminds too much on <strong>the</strong> wages <strong>the</strong>y receive. They labor <strong>for</strong> wages and lose sight of <strong>the</strong>sacredness and importance of <strong>the</strong> work.Some become slack and negligent in <strong>the</strong>ir labor; <strong>the</strong>y pass over <strong>the</strong> ground, but areweak and unsuccessful in <strong>the</strong>ir467
