If <strong>the</strong> church should help such individuals instead ofleaving <strong>the</strong>m to rely upon <strong>the</strong>ir own resources, it would injure <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong> end, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ylook to <strong>the</strong> church and expect to receive help from <strong>the</strong>m and do not practice self-denialand economy when <strong>the</strong>y are well provided <strong>for</strong>. And if <strong>the</strong>y do not receive help everytime, Satan tempts <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong>y become jealous and very conscientious <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>irbrethren, fearing <strong>the</strong>y will fail to do all <strong>the</strong>ir duty to <strong>the</strong>m. The mistake is on <strong>the</strong>ir ownpart. They are deceived. They are not <strong>the</strong> Lord’s poor.The instructions given in <strong>the</strong> word of God in regard to helping <strong>the</strong> poor do nottouch such cases, but are <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> un<strong>for</strong>tunate and afflicted. God in His providence hasafflicted individuals to test and prove o<strong>the</strong>rs. Widows and invalids are in <strong>the</strong> church toprove a blessing to <strong>the</strong> church. They are a part of <strong>the</strong> means which God has chosen todevelop <strong>the</strong> true character of Christ’s professed followers and to call into exercise <strong>the</strong>precious traits of character manifested by our compassionate Redeemer.Many who can but barely live when <strong>the</strong>y are single, choose to marry and raise afamily when <strong>the</strong>y know <strong>the</strong>y have nothing with which to support <strong>the</strong>m. And worse thanthis, <strong>the</strong>y have no family government. Their whole course in <strong>the</strong>ir family is markedwith <strong>the</strong>ir loose, slack habits. They have but little control over <strong>the</strong>mselves, and arepassionate, impatient, and fretful. When such embrace <strong>the</strong> message, <strong>the</strong>y feel that <strong>the</strong>yare entitled to assistance from <strong>the</strong>ir more wealthy brethren; and if <strong>the</strong>ir expectationsare not met, <strong>the</strong>y complain of <strong>the</strong> church and accuse <strong>the</strong>m of not living out <strong>the</strong>ir faith.Who must be <strong>the</strong> sufferers in this case? Must <strong>the</strong> cause of God be sapped, and <strong>the</strong>treasury in different places exhausted, to take care of <strong>the</strong>se large families of poor? No.The parents must be <strong>the</strong> sufferers. They will not, as a general thing, suffer any greaterlack after <strong>the</strong>y embrace <strong>the</strong> Sabbath than <strong>the</strong>y did be<strong>for</strong>e.273
