immodestly expose <strong>the</strong>mselves would be hissed at; but modesty and decency must besacrificed to <strong>the</strong> God of fashion. May <strong>the</strong> Lord deliver His people from this grievoussin! God will not pity those who will be slaves to fashion. But supposing <strong>the</strong>re is somelittle convenience in wearing hoops, does this prove that it is right to wear <strong>the</strong>m? Let<strong>the</strong> fashion change, and convenience would no longer be mentioned. It is <strong>the</strong> duty ofevery child of God to inquire: “Wherein am I separate from <strong>the</strong> world?” Let us suffera little inconvenience, and be on <strong>the</strong> safe side. What crosses do God’s people bear?They mingle with <strong>the</strong> world, partake of <strong>the</strong>ir spirit, dress, talk, and act like <strong>the</strong>m.Read 1 Timothy 2:9, 10: “In like manner also, that women adorn <strong>the</strong>mselves inmodest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, orpearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with goodworks.” Also 1 Peter 3:3-5: “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning ofplaiting <strong>the</strong> hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be <strong>the</strong>hidden man of <strong>the</strong> heart, in that which is not corruptible, even <strong>the</strong> ornament of a meekand quiet spirit, which is in <strong>the</strong> sight of God of great price. For after this manner in<strong>the</strong> old time <strong>the</strong> holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned <strong>the</strong>mselves, being insubjection unto <strong>the</strong>ir own husbands.”The power of example is great.
