ushed into battle and fought bravely, desperately. The dead and dying were on everyside. Both <strong>the</strong> North and <strong>the</strong> South suffered severely. The Sou<strong>the</strong>rn men felt <strong>the</strong> battle,and in a little while would have been driven back still fur<strong>the</strong>r. The Nor<strong>the</strong>rn men wererushing on, although <strong>the</strong>ir destruction was very great. Just <strong>the</strong>n an angel descendedand waved his hand backward. Instantly <strong>the</strong>re was confusion in <strong>the</strong> ranks. It appearedto <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn men that <strong>the</strong>ir troops were retreating, when it was not so in reality, anda precipitate retreat commenced. This seemed wonderful to me.Then it was explained that God had this nation in His own hand, and would notsuffer victories to be gained faster than He ordained, and would permit no more lossesto <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn men than in His wisdom He saw fit, to punish <strong>the</strong>m <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sins.And had <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn army at this time pushed <strong>the</strong> battle still fur<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong>ir fainting,exhausted condition, <strong>the</strong> far greater struggle and destruction which awaited <strong>the</strong>m wouldhave caused great triumph in <strong>the</strong> South. God would not permit this, and sent an angelto interfere. The sudden falling back of <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn troops is a mystery to all. Theyknow not that God’s hand was in <strong>the</strong> matter.The destruction of <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn army was so great that <strong>the</strong>y had no heart to boast.The sight of <strong>the</strong> dead, <strong>the</strong> dying, and <strong>the</strong> wounded gave <strong>the</strong>m but little courage totriumph. This destruction, occurring when <strong>the</strong>y had every advantage, and <strong>the</strong> Northgreat disadvantage, caused <strong>the</strong>m much perplexity. They know that if <strong>the</strong> North havean equal chance with <strong>the</strong>m, victory is certain <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> North. Their only hope is tooccupy positions difficult of approach, and <strong>the</strong>n have <strong>for</strong>midable arrangements to hurldestruction on every hand.The South have streng<strong>the</strong>ned <strong>the</strong>mselves greatly since <strong>the</strong>ir rebellion firstcommenced. If active measures had <strong>the</strong>n been taken by <strong>the</strong> North, this rebellion wouldhave been speedily crushed out. But that which was small at first has increased instrength and numbers until it has become most267
