Unprofitable conversation upon<strong>the</strong> acts of o<strong>the</strong>rs, small talk about this young man or that girl, wi<strong>the</strong>rs noble, devotionalthoughts and feelings, and drives good and holy desires from <strong>the</strong> heart, leaving it coldand destitute of true love <strong>for</strong> God and His truth.Children would be saved from many evils if <strong>the</strong>y would be more familiar with <strong>the</strong>irparents. Parents should encourage in <strong>the</strong>ir children a disposition to be open and frankwith <strong>the</strong>m, to come to <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong>ir difficulties, and when <strong>the</strong>y are perplexed as towhat course is right, to lay <strong>the</strong> matter just as <strong>the</strong>y view it be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> parents and ask<strong>the</strong>ir advice. Who are so well calculated to see and point out <strong>the</strong>ir dangers as godlyparents? Who can understand <strong>the</strong> peculiar temperaments of <strong>the</strong>ir own children as wellas <strong>the</strong>y? The mo<strong>the</strong>r who has watched every turn of <strong>the</strong> mind from infancy, and is thusacquainted with <strong>the</strong> natural disposition, is best prepared to counsel her children. Whocan tell as well what traits of character to check and restrain, as <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r, aided by<strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r?Children who are Christians will prefer <strong>the</strong> love and approbation of <strong>the</strong>irGod-fearing parents above every earthly blessing. They will love and honor <strong>the</strong>irparents. It should be one of <strong>the</strong> principal studies of <strong>the</strong>ir lives, how to make <strong>the</strong>irparents happy. In this rebellious age, children who have not received right instructionand discipline have but little sense of <strong>the</strong>ir obligations to <strong>the</strong>ir parents. It is often <strong>the</strong>case that <strong>the</strong> more <strong>the</strong>ir parents do <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> more ungrateful <strong>the</strong>y are, and <strong>the</strong> less<strong>the</strong>y respect <strong>the</strong>m. Children who have been petted and waited upon, always expect it;and if <strong>the</strong>ir expectations are not met, <strong>the</strong>y are disappointed and discouraged.
