prospered <strong>the</strong> more eager are <strong>the</strong>y <strong>for</strong> gain. Some of <strong>the</strong>se, who in <strong>the</strong>ir poverty wereonce even benevolent, become penurious and exacting. Money becomes <strong>the</strong>ir god.They delight in <strong>the</strong> power which money gives <strong>the</strong>m, in <strong>the</strong> honor <strong>the</strong>y receive becauseof it. Said <strong>the</strong> angel: “Mark ye how <strong>the</strong>y stand <strong>the</strong> test. Watch <strong>the</strong> development ofcharacter under <strong>the</strong> influence of riches.” Some were oppressing <strong>the</strong> needy poor andwould obtain <strong>the</strong>ir services <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> lowest figure. They were overbearing; money waspower to <strong>the</strong>m. God’s eye, I saw, was upon <strong>the</strong>m. They were deceived. “And, behold,I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his workshall be.”Some who are wealthy do not withhold from ministers. They keep up <strong>the</strong>irsystematic benevolence exactly and pride <strong>the</strong>mselves upon <strong>the</strong>ir punctuality andgenerosity, and think <strong>the</strong>ir duty ends here. This is well as far as it goes, but <strong>the</strong>irduty does not cease here. God has claims upon <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>y do not realize. Societyhas claims upon <strong>the</strong>m; <strong>the</strong>ir fellow men have claims upon <strong>the</strong>m. Every member of <strong>the</strong>irfamily has claims upon <strong>the</strong>m. All <strong>the</strong>se claims should be regarded; not one should beoverlooked or neglected. Some men give to ministers and put into <strong>the</strong> treasury with asmuch satisfaction as though it would entitle <strong>the</strong>m to heaven. Some think that <strong>the</strong>y cando nothing to aid <strong>the</strong> cause of God unless <strong>the</strong>y constantly have a large increase. Theyfeel that <strong>the</strong>y can in nowise touch <strong>the</strong> principal. Should our Saviour speak <strong>the</strong> samewords to <strong>the</strong>m that He did to <strong>the</strong> certain ruler, “Go and sell that thou hast, and give to<strong>the</strong> poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow Me,” <strong>the</strong>y wouldgo away sorrowful, choosing like him to run <strong>the</strong> risk of retaining <strong>the</strong>ir idols, riches,ra<strong>the</strong>r than to part with <strong>the</strong>m to secure treasure in heaven. This ruler claimed that hehad kept all <strong>the</strong> commandments of God from his youth up, and confident in his fidelityand righteousness, and thinking that he was perfect,483
