Instead of sweeping, he took a break behind the shed where hismother couldn’t see him. He noticed a trail of ants and lay down towatch.Antone marveled at how hard the little ants worked. Just watchingthem made him tired.Suddenly, Antone got smaller, and antennas sprouted from his head. Before he could panic, he was jostled by one of the ants. “No time todawdle,” said the ant.“But I’m not an ant,” Antone said in his most polite voice.“Ordinarily, I’m a boy.”“Perhaps you were a boy,” the ant replied, “but now you’re an ant.Back to work!”Antone led the ants to the garbage can where he knew they wouldfind leftovers from breakfast. As he lifted a big chunk of bacon, he wasjostled again. “Back to work!” He recognized the voice. “Wake up,”said his mother.Antone sat up and counted his arms and legs—only two of each! Hemarched back into the shed and worked like an ant until it was spotless.Antone had learned a good lesson from his adventure as an ant.continued124 © 2009 Sopris West Educational Services.
