30 Institutional Governance and the Trustees of Anatolia College
the “Ephors, to use anatolia’s parlance” 9 they are the directors of the
Institution. their role is not well known in the anatolian community and
in Greece. and boards of directors and the corporate governance system
are becoming increasingly relevant. 10
My assignment is to describe anatolia’s governance, the form and function
of its Board of trustees, and to further advance the role model claim. 11
I will start by profiling Board membership and culture, in view of the
defining human element (section I).
next, I will go over the structural parts by outlining the duties and responsibilities
of the trustees (section II) and how the Board relates to the
Presidency (section III). 12 I will proceed by sketching how the Board and
its committees are organized for their assignments (section Iv). following
that, I will highlight the legal and tax regime of the Institution’s non-profit
organization (section v). I will then identify the authorities which regulate
and the agencies which accredit the Institution (section vI). 13
finally, I will review briefly the operations and assets - the results of what
the Board has been able to rebuild in thessaloniki since 1924 and which it
oversees for the common good (section vII).
In conclusion, I will add my voice to those who advocate that well governed
non-profit organizations (nPo’s), such as anatolia, and institutions
based along similar lines, are increasingly useful and merit support. 14
