looking beyond demographics and a sound legal framework, it is evident
that there are transcending intangibles to Board effectiveness. Board culture
stands out.
anatolia has benefited from a socially responsible and harmonious corporate
ethos led by a dedicated nucleus. though debates are vigorous,
civility and mutual respect for everyone’s contributions bridges any
differences.
BOARD CULTURE
there is a great deal of developed consensus despite the diversity of views.
this is not a coincidence and it requires nurturing. Buying into the mission,
professionalism, self-discipline, and bonding all play a part. the common understanding,
that insofar as their obligations to anatolia are concerned, trustees
are, first and foremost, anatolia trustees – and not Greek trustees or american
trustees or anything else – is another treasured key to cohesiveness.
comparisons to divided boards, or cliques with preferments for insiders,
are in sharp contrast and envigorating. 23
the challenge in the future will be to retain that culture which has served
anatolia so well and distinguishes its Board. What is more, to mentor, and
pass it on to our new Board members – the future leaders of the Institution. 24
