the focus on trustees should not detract from the leading role played by
the President, the cabinet, and the administration, which together with the
faculty, embody the school. they are the persons who nurture our students.
they are the persons whom the graduates remember.
the President is the ceo. “The President (is) directly responsible to the
Trustees for the overall administration of the Campus” (By-laws art. 5.7).
to put it another way, the Board determines the policies, and the President
implements them. In this the President is aided by the administration,
whose senior members are now called the “Cabinet,” and which consists
of the vice Presidents for academic affairs, administration, finance, Institutional
advancement, and secondary education. 32
as a practical matter, the Board is largely dependant on the information
and recommendations of the President and the cabinet. they are the executives;
and they are the only persons managing the affairs of the Institution
full-time.
this governance model places the Presidents in the eye of the storm. anatolia’s
history is a dramatic reminder. 33 the american evangelical missions
in asia Minor may have been unique. 34 they dealt with establishment issues
in a hostile environment, divisive matters of personal faith and community
