70 Institutional Governance and the Trustees of Anatolia College All Odds” (caratzas 1986, hereinafter “stephens”). the chronology in stephens, updated in ccc through 2008 by dr. Phil holland, lists the Institution’s historical highlights. MerZIfon to thessalonIKI anatolia college evolved out of the reorganized Merzifon (Marsovan) seminary in 1886. Its origins may be tracked back to the “Haystack Meeting” at Williams college in 1806 and to Bebek seminary, founded in constantinople by cyrus hamlin in 1840. the seminary portion of the school moved inland to Marsovan in 1862, while the liberal arts division remained in constantinople and became robert college (and eventually, the modern-day Bogazici university). anatolia college itself was founded in 1886 and chartered by the commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1894. following the forced closure and expropriation of the Marsovan campus by the turkish government in 1921, the school relocated 800 miles due west to thessaloniki in 1924. Prime Minister eleftherios venizelos had encouraged then-President George e. White to re-open the school there in order to serve the city’s increased educational needs resulting from the “Asia Minor Catastrophe” and massive influx of refugees.

White, 2 nd President of anatolia college (1913-1933), describes the beginnings in “Adventuring with Anatolia College” (herald-register 1940). 35. see Peter Balakian “Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America’s Response” (2003), which received the 2005 raphael lemkin Prize and was a New York Times “bestseller.” as to the hangings of the anatolia students symeon ananiadis, Pavlides, and their professors in 1921, also see efthymios Kouzinos, “Twenty-three Years in Asia Minor 1899-1922” (vantage, newYork 1969). 36. It should be recalled that before popular air travel in the 1950’s and 1960’s, a trans-atlantic and european crossing could take a fortnight - not to mention the cost. contacts were by mail and telegraph. 37. together with two other american hellenic Institute colleagues, trustee emeritus Gene rossides and Jim Marketos, the author is the editor of the two volume foreign investment service on “Doing Business In Greece” (ahI foundation, Washington, d.c. 1996, 2000), which contributed in part to paying off the mortgage on the hellenic house in Washington, d.c. 38. In thessaloniki during the 1970’s and 1980’s, usIs, american express, and us military cars were struck with bombs. It is clear from recovered surveillance reports that the terrorist organization “17 November” surveilled other american institutions in thessaloniki during 1990-92, but apparently not anatolia. (Interview with Brady Kiesling, author and former us diplomat, citing 17 november computer files in To Vima 2002.) 39. to paraphrase the stephens title that says it all (note 33 supra). 40. Well-founded initiatives and development are clearly favored. this is indicated, in part, by great growth over the last 38 years. among others, the Business school, act, MBa, IB, elementary and Kindergarten, and Msu were added. as President Jackson pointed out (ccc forward) this extended the Institution’s services to parallel asia Minor levels. What is more, the high representation of Presidents and ceo’s of other organizations on the Board is particularly well positioned to identify with the executive perspective.
