As discussed in Annex 1, LRIT data was processed in a way consistent with AIS sources. LRIT as a data source<br />

is discussed in more detail in the following section on temporal coverage. Comparing LRIT with AIS coverage,<br />

it is immediately apparent that the coverage is adequate for LRIT in the North Atlantic and Indian Ocean but<br />

poor in the Pacific. For the most part, it is suitable as a corroborating data set for coastal regions. The major<br />

areas of traffic highlighted by LRIT are the European sea area, the Far East (Singapore, China, Japan and the<br />

Republic of Korea) and the shipping lane connecting them. These areas and routes are well covered in AIS<br />

from 2010. There are no regions identified by LRIT that are not covered adequately by the 2010 to 2012 data<br />

sets.
