The Full-Flat Seat
Think of the new full-flat seat as a bed that can be
reclined horizontally to 180 degrees for optimum
comfort and that is exactly what KLM is trying to
achieve; to make passengers feel at home aboard
the flight. It comes up to about 2.07m long when
reclined so passengers of any height can lie fully flat
comfortably; how great is that? The seat cover is
made of the finest sheep’s wool in a range of warm
tones to create a soothing shade that exudes comfort
to sit and see.
The fully flat-seat comes with a double-faced pillows
where each side is made of different materials
designated for different purposes. The crisp white
cotton side is when it’s time to go to sleep while the
silk finish on the other side is for a cool, comfortable
touch.
You can find your own amenity kits waiting for you
aboard the flight. Designed by Viktor & Rolf, a worldfamous
Amsterdam-based fashion house, the amenity
kits are exclusively created for KLM’S WBC and come
in both male and female editions.
Need some privacy? No worries, there’s a privacy
screen that you can put up just in case you need
some me-time. The seat also include a personal
storage space and 17” HD touch screen with ondemand
entertainment. You can even work or play
while flying with the in-seat power points. Now, that
sounds more like home, doesn’t it?
The Design
KLM’s WBC tones down the business-like look to achieve a
greater sense of homey-feel by incorporating a characteristically
warm colour palette, use of more sustainable materials and by
enhancing passenger’s personal comfort.
Maintaining the KLM Blue
Naturally, KLM’s WBC still features the fresh and recognisable
KLM blue. Blending warmer and darker colours into the existing
colour range, the colour combination will make the KLM blue
stand out and sparkle ever more. The five new colours that will
be incorporated are aubergine, dark brown, midnight blue,
cobalt and dark grey.
Innovative and Sustainable
While the design must be innovative, it must also be sustainable.
To meet this requirement, KLM has come up with new solutions
found within the existing options available in the airline industry.
For instance, carpeting was manufactured using high-quality
recycled materials which include old KLM stewardess’ uniforms.
The old uniforms are used to spin new yarn which was then
incorporated into the blue details of the carpet. KLM recycles
all of its discarded carpets in collaboration with a carpet
manufacturer, Desso, based on a cradle-to-cradle principle.
