86 “I DON’T DANCE”
Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure (2001). When the young canine
Scamp (voice of Scott Wolf) falls into puppy love with the female pup Angel
(Alyssa Milano), they romp about the town and through the park playing
with fireflies and even stopping at Tony’s restaurant for some spaghetti and
meatballs. The two canines’ thoughts are sung on the soundtrack by Roger
Bart and Susan Egan.
“I Don’t Dance” is the clever song about dancing that uses baseball
imagery in the television movie High School Musical 2 (2007). When the
effeminate drama geek Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) tries to convince macho
athlete Chad (Corbin Bleu) that the jock can learn to dance for a country
club talent show, Chad insists that he doesn’t dance. To prove to him that
anyone can learn to do something outside of his or her comfort zone, Ryan
takes up baseball, and Chad agrees to give dancing a try. The resulting pop
duet is smooth and seething with machismo, reflecting Chad’s need to be
perceived as a man in spite of the request that he dance. Matthew Gerrard
and Robbie Nevil wrote the sly duet that comments on stereotypes as it
uses baseball terms to describe dance steps.
spirit, written by Frank De Vol for the film sequel Herbie Goes Bananas
(1980). After a series of adventures in Mexico, the VW Herbie and his new
owner, Pete Stanchek (Stephen W. Burns), realize they have become close
friends, and their thoughts are conveyed in this Latin-flavored number,
complete with Spanish expressions, which is sung by a children’s chorus
over the final credits of the movie.
“I, Ivan Frank” is the tango-flavored “I am” song for the crackpot scientist–
villain in the animated film Teacher’s Pet (2004), inspired by the popular
television series. Kevin Quinn, Cheri Steinkellner, and Randy Petersen
wrote the satirical number in which the wacko Dr. Frank (voice of Kelsey
Grammer) sings that he is a man ahead of his time, greater than Dr. Frankenstein,
and that someday the world (and even his own mother) will appreciate
his genius for turning animals into humans.
“I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” is the ambitious “I am” song for the
young lion cub Simba (singing voice of Jason Weaver) in the animated
movie The Lion King (1994). The future king sings enthusiastically of his
plans while he frolics across the savanna with young Nala (Laura Williams)
and tries to lose the watchful hornbill Zazu (Rowan Atkinson), who
