“LOOK AT ME” 123
“Little Wooden Head” is the toe-tapping dance number written by Leigh
Harline (music) and Ned Washington (lyric) for the animated movie Pinocchio
(1940). After the toymaker Geppetto (voice of Christian Rub) completes
his new marionette, which he names Pinocchio, he works the strings and has
the puppet dance around the shop with him, the both of them doing some
fancy footwork while Geppetto sings about the wooden-headed puppet.
“Live Alone and Like It” is the breezy song of independence written by
Stephen Sondheim for the film Dick Tracy (1990), but little survived the
editing and Mel Tormé is heard singing only a portion of the number on
the soundtrack. The upbeat song proclaims that life without commitment
to others is the only way to go, though the subtext of the number hints at
dissatisfaction. John Barrowman sang the song in the Broadway revue Putting
It Together (1999), and it was also recorded by Mandy Patinkin. James
Naughton sang the number for the benefit Sondheim at Carnegie Hall, and
his recording is much admired.
“Livin’ One Day at a Time” is the optimistic number about taking each
day as a gift, heard at the beginning of the movie Charley and the Angel
(1973). Shane Tatum and Ed Scott wrote the pastiche big-band swing number,
and it is sung on the soundtrack by a female chorus. Since Charley (Fred
MacMurray) is visited by the angel Roy (Harry Morgan), who tells him that
his time is up, the song effectively conveys the theme of the movie.
“Lizzie McGuire Theme Song” is the pop song by Sam Winans that
opens each episode of the live-action television series Lizzie McGuire
(2001), about an adolescent whose alter ego is an animated version of
herself. Hallie Todd sings the lite-rock number about dealing with life and
figuring things out along the way.
“The Long, Long Day” is the powerful finale of the biblical concertpageant
King David (1997). The aging David (Marcus Lovett) sings this
soaring musical number, in which he looks death in the eye and thinks
back on his life, reviewing his efforts on behalf of what the Lord wanted.
Alan Menken composed the lofty music and Tim Rice penned the lyrics of
undaunted courage and faith.
“Look at Me” is the romantic song about first love Frank De Vol wrote for
the movie sequel Herbie Goes Bananas (1980). The new owner of the VW
“love bug” Herbie, Pete Stanchek (Stephen W. Burns), meets the nerdy
