“SPIN AND MARTY THEME” 183<br />

<strong>The</strong> part-animated, part-live-action movie <strong>Song</strong> of the South (1946) has sometimes been<br />

criticized for its “Negro” stereotypes, but the film is filled with authentic-sounding African<br />

American music and sterling performances by the black actors. James Baskett’s heartwarming<br />

portrayal of Uncle Remus is most remembered, but just as radiant is Hattie McDaniel as Aunt<br />

Tempy, seen here making a pie and singing “Sooner or Later.” (Walt <strong>Disney</strong>/Photofest)<br />

the film, during a montage showing Dick Tracy’s raids on illegal operations<br />

across town. Rachel York sang the bluesy song Off-Broadway in the revue<br />

Putting It Together (1993) and the ballad has been recorded by Madonna,<br />

Karen Akers, Bernadette Peters, Karen Ziemba, Susan Egan, and Jane<br />

Krakowski.<br />

“SpectroMagic” is the regal song of celebration that was heard at the beginning<br />

and end of the popular SpectroMagic Parade, which was featured<br />

at the Magic Kingdom at <strong>Disney</strong> World from 1991 to 1999. <strong>The</strong> number<br />

features blaring trumpets and a chorus singing about a magic found all over<br />

the world that is like a million stars. <strong>The</strong> parade, which used fiber optics<br />

effectively, was so popular that it returned in 2001.<br />

“Spin and Marty <strong>The</strong>me” is the pastiche camp song used in the serial <strong>The</strong><br />

Adventures of Spin and Marty, which was a regular feature on the television<br />

show <strong>The</strong> Mickey Mouse Club (1955). <strong>The</strong> number is an easygoing
