citizens. Eli and the company reprise the peppy number at the happy ending
of the film.
“Something There” is the charming character song written by Alan Menken
(music) and Howard Ashman (lyric) for the animated film Beauty and
the Beast (1991). As Belle (voice of Paige O’Hara) starts to see the Beast in
a new light and even begins to fall in love with him, she sings this restless
and contemplative number, with musical comments from Mrs. Potts (Angela
Lansbury), both noticing something there that wasn’t there previously.
Then the Beast (Robby Benson) sings his own reflections on the situation.
Also adding commentary to the number are Lumière (Jerry Orbach) and
Cogsworth (David Ogden Stiers). In the 1994 Broadway version of Beauty
and the Beast, Susan Egan and Beth Fowler, as Belle and Mrs. Potts, sang
the number with Lumière (Gary Beach), Cogsworth (Heath Lamberts),
and the Beast (Terrence Mann). A pleasing quartet version of the song was
made by Meredith Inglesby, Andy Karl, Tyler Maynard, and Keewa Nurullah
in 2005.
“Something’s Up with Jack” is the driving song of anticipation Danny
Elfman wrote for the stop-motion movie The Nightmare Before Christmas
(1993). While Jack Skellington (singing voice of Elfman) locks himself up
in a tower and investigates the various holiday objects he has taken from
Christmas Town, the citizens of Halloween Town sing this insistent number
as they try to guess what is the matter with their Pumpkin King. The song
builds to a frenzy and Jack has an epiphany: to take over the production and
execution of Christmas. The number is also listed as “Jack’s Obsession.”
“Son of Man” is the pulsating rock number about finding your place in the
world written by Phil Collins for the animated movie Tarzan (1999). Collins
sings the driving song on the soundtrack as the young Tarzan grows up
into a man and gains strength and wisdom, and Collins reprises the number
on the soundtrack of the animated video sequel Tarzan II (2005). In the
2006 Broadway version of Tarzan, the number was sung by Terk (Chester
Gregory II) and the other apes, encouraging Tarzan to fulfill his dreams of
becoming an adult man as strong as any ape.
“The Song of Life” is the rhythmic pop song about appreciating life
every day that Don Harper and Mark Mancina wrote for the animated
video sequel Tarzan and Jane (2002). As Tarzan and Jane celebrate their
