176 “SING A NEW SONG”
“Sing a New Song” is the calypso-flavored song from an episode of the
animated television series The Little Mermaid (1992). When an ugly,
oversized purple sea monster complains that he is a misfit and everyone is
afraid of him, the mermaid Ariel (voice of Jodi Benson) befriends him and
suggests that he change his song to a happier one and take on a new point
of view about life.
“Sing Ho for the Life of a Bear” is the merry march number written
by Carly Simon for the animated film Piglet’s Big Movie (2003). Simon
sings it on the soundtrack and is joined by Winnie the Pooh (voice of Jim
Cummings), Tigger (also Cummings), Kanga (Kath Soucie), Roo (Nikita
Hopkins), Eeyore (Peter Cullen), and Piglet (John Fiedler) as they set off
on an “expotition” for high adventure. The number is also listed as “Expotition
March.”
“Sister Suffragette” is the pastiche march song of protest that Mrs. Banks
(Glynis Johns) sings in the movie musical Mary Poppins (1964). Returning
from a women’s rights meeting, the activist wife and mother Mrs. Banks
sings the sprightly number urging votes for women. The cook Mrs. Brill
(Reta Shaw) and the housekeeper Ellen (Hermione Baddeley) join her
in singing the rousing number, and all the while, the nanny Katie Nana
(Elsa Lanchester) tries to tell Mrs. Banks that she is quitting. Richard M.
and Robert B. Sherman wrote the song, which is among the handful not
used in the 2004 London and 2006 Broadway versions of Mary Poppins,
because the character of Mrs. Banks was changed from a suffragette to an
ex-actress.
“The Skumps” is the comic duet that pastiches a medieval drinking song,
written by George Bruns (music), Erdman Penner, and Tom Adair (lyric)
for the animated film Sleeping Beauty (1959). King Stefan (voice of Taylor
Holmes) and King Hubert (Bill Thompson) celebrate the impending nuptials
of their betrothed offspring by toasting each other with the silly title
phrase, getting drunker as they repeat it over and over.
“Sleeping Beauty Song” is the dreamy lullaby-like number by George
Bruns (music) and Tom Adair (lyric) that the chorus sings on the soundtrack
as each of the three Good Fairies presents a magical gift to the infant Princess
Aurora in the animated movie Sleeping Beauty (1959). Flora (voice
of Verna Felton) grants the baby the gift of beauty and Fauna (Barbara Jo
Allen) gives her the gift of song before the wicked fairy Maleficent (Elea-
