“THE FOREST OF NO RETURN” 59
Londoners John (voice of Tommy Luske) and Michael (Paul Collins) lead
the Lost Boys on an expedition to explore the island of Never Land, the
group singing and whistling merrily as they bounce along. The tuneful
sing-along number is also known as “Tee Dum–Tee Dee” and “March of
the Lost Boys.”
“For a Moment” is the melodic duet written by Michael and Patty Silversher
for mother and daughter in the made-for-video animated sequel The
Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000). The human girl Melody (voice
of Tara Charendoff) is turned into a mermaid, and she celebrates her ability
to join the creatures of the sea as she sings this expansive ballad. At the
same time, her mother, Ariel (Jodi Benson), is worried about her and sings
of her concerns, the two voices harmonizing together effectively.
“For Now, For Always” is the entrancing love song used throughout the
movie The Parent Trap (1961). Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman wrote
the flowing number about a new love that is bound to last forever, and it is
first heard in the film when Maggie (Maureen O’Hara) sings part of it to her
daughter Susan (Hayley Mills) as they stroll through a Boston park, recalling
that it was the song played at the Italian restaurant on her first date with
Susan’s father. An instrumental version of the ballad is played on a record
when the twin sisters set up a romantic environment for their separated
parents, hoping to re-create their first date. Finally, a studio chorus sings it
at the end of the movie when the parents remarry. Rebecca Luker made a
notable recording of the song in 2003.
“For the First Time” is a piercing ballad of discovering love written by
Phil Collins for the 2006 Broadway version of Tarzan. Jane Porter (Jenn
Gambatese) realizes that the wild man Tarzan (Josh Strickland) makes her
feel as no one else has, and she confesses to herself that she loves him. Tarzan
reprises the song, experiencing the same feelings and wondering if she
could ever love such a man as himself.
“The Forest of No Return” is an adaptation of a song from the 1903
Victor Herbert operetta Babes in Toyland which George Bruns (music)
and Mel Leven (lyric) wrote for the 1961 screen version of the operetta.
When Little Bo Peep (Ann Jillian) loses her sheep and looks for them in
a haunted forest, a chorus of trees and children sing this creepy song of
warning that uses musical instruments to imitate the sound of people walking
on tiptoe.
