“FIRST” 57
“Femininity” is the outdated but still entertaining song from the film Summer
Magic (1963) that teaches a girl to be demure and feminine and not
talk or laugh too much if she wants to win a man. Richard M. and Robert B.
Sherman wrote the number, sung by Maine cousins Nancy (Hayley Mills)
and Julia (Deborah Walley) to the shy Lallie Joy Popham (Wendy Turner)
before going to a barn dance.
“Ferdinand the Bull” is the Spanish-flavored title song written by Albert
Hay Malotte (music) and Larry Morey (lyric) for the 1938 film short, but
only the music survived the final cut of the Oscar-winning movie. The narrative
song relates the story of the peaceful bull Ferdinand, who would
rather smell flowers than fight other bulls or matadors. When the short film
was rewritten and nonsinging narration by Don Wilson was added, the song
was not necessary, and only the music was used on the soundtrack. The
playful number was published and showed up on children’s records, and
Michael Feinstein made a zesty recording of the song in 1992.
“Fidelity Fiduciary Bank” is the wry anthem-like tribute to the British
banking system written by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman for the
movie musical Mary Poppins (1964). Aged bank chairman Mr. Dawes Sr.
(Dick Van Dyke), Mr. Banks (David Tomlinson), and some stuffy bankers
sing the pious number to young Michael Banks (Matthew Garber), urging
him to deposit his tuppence in their bank and invest in the great British
Empire. Instead of inspiring the youth, the men only succeed in frightening
him with their greedy and antiquated views.
“Find Yourself” is the gentle song of reflection written by Brad Paisley
for the computer-animated movie Cars (2006). Paisley sings the folk-like
number, about having to be in a strange and new place in order to discover
who you truly are, on the soundtrack at the end of the film. The song, sometimes
listed as “When You Find Yourself,” was recorded by Drew Seeley
in 2007.
“First” is the driving rock song written by Kara DioGuardi and John
Shanks for the movie sequel Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005). The lyric is the
boast of a jealous girl who is determined to become the first in the eyes of a
certain guy. Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the film, sings the heavy metal
number over the opening credits. The song is reprised at the beginning of
the final credits as well. Lohan made a music video of the number.
