Reddy’s recording of the Oscar-nominated song enjoyed some popularity.
Anneliese van der Pol also recorded the ballad in 2006.
“Carrying the Banner” is the rousing song of pride written by Alan Menken
(music) and Jack Feldman (lyric) for the period movie musical Newsies
(1992). The newsboys who sell the World on New York City street corners
in 1899 wake up before dawn, wearily singing of their tough life. But as the
sun rises and they hit the streets, the “newsies” come alive, proud to “carry
the banner,” and even break into a vigorous dance. The song is reprised
in the closing sequence of the film as the boys celebrate their victory over
Joseph Pulitzer in a newsboy strike.
Although the action of the tale is animated, the song is illustrated with a
series of Currier and Ives–like stills showing the crowd gathering at the
ballpark.
“The Castaways Theme” is a torchy lullaby sung by Mary Grant (Hayley
Mills) in the adventure film In Search of the Castaways (1962). Richard M.
and Robert B. Sherman wrote the lovely song about hope for castaways of
all kinds, and Mary sings it about her father, a skipper who was lost at sea
near New Zealand.
“The Caucus Race” is a farcical list song written by Sammy Fain (music)
and Bob Hilliard (lyric) for the animated fantasy movie Alice in Wonderland
(1951). On a seashore, the Dodo (voice of Bill Thompson) organizes a
method to get dry. While he stands on a rock dictating instructions, various
sea creatures race around him and sing about getting dry. Soon they are
